The Way of a Christian Samurai

I have recently been reading this book named “The Way of the Christian Samurai” by Paul Nowak. The overall theme of the book is about serving our master like the samurai in feudal Japan served their masters. Paul Nowak does things like take writings of the ancient samurai and turns them around and shows how similar it is to what God is asking from us. For example, on the back of the book he quotes from the Hagakure:

If one were to say in a word what the condition of being a samurai is, Its basis lies in the seriously devoting one’s body and soul to his master.

In a way all Christians are samurai, in the book, Nowak states that the word samurai literally means “one who serves”. He also gives a brief, yet very meaty history of the samurai which I found very interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to find out how and what to do to serve our Lord. Nowak has my thumbs up.

  1. I like this book too. Samurai legends really need to be introduced to Western Christian culture. We have some fiction that is relevant to Christianity (Pilgrim’s Progress, Narnia, Harry Potter, etc), but Samurai stories can be SO relevant, yet they are barely even touched by the Christian. Nowak’s book is a good step in that direction.
